In this three-week class, students will learn about the lives and artistic styles of two iconic American artists – Jim Dine and Jackson Pollack and renown German artist, Fredrick Hundertwasser. All three of these prominent artists were trailblazers and known for their distinctive painting and art making styles that continue to resonate and influence artists today. Instructor Sarajane Fellini will use one of the artists’ signature paintings as a starting point for each of the three classes and help guide the students through their own unique interpretation of the featured artists’ work. Students will be painting with acrylic on canvas. This class is open to all levels.

Jim Dine – Introduced “pop culture” by painting and drawing everyday objects. Like tools, a favorite piece of clothing, and flowers. He put his personal spin on his work through the expressive use of color and textures. Dine frequently used the heart shape as a symbol of complex expression. Students will be drawing inspiration from Dine’s “Confetti Heart” painting to create their own colorfully symbolic heart painting.

Fredrich Hundertwasser – An Austrian born artist who made his home in Germany, is remembered for his accomplishments in painting, architecture, sculpture, and printmaking. He is known for his vibrant use of color and symbolism often inspired by patterns found in nature. He was a world traveler and sailor and spent time in Italy, Morocco, Tunisia, and Nepal. Students will enjoy learning how his eccentric lifestyle inspired his distinctive artistic style.

Jackson Pollock – a classically trained painter became a member of the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1940’s and 50’s in New York. He is renowned for the development of his overall “drip” or “action” painting technique. He used his brushes to gesturally cover massive canvases with all types of paint building up the surface to create visually dense non-objective stories. In this class students will be starting with a rich painted black background then building their own layers of color through action brush techniques.

Sarajane Fellini is an Artist Member of the ACWL-Nuveen where she sells her whimsical, colorful batiks and paintings and shares her vast teaching experience that she gained while running the art program at Rivermont Collegiate, in Bettendorf, Iowa. Sarajane is a regular art instructor at the ACWL-Nuveen teaching a variety of themed youth and adult classes.
