Here's What's Happening in the White Lake Area This Week!

What a week! We finally got our first true taste of fall this past weekend — crisp air, colorful leaves beginning to change, and plenty of festive fun with Pumpkinfest and other seasonal happenings across the White Lake Area. 🍂 As we look ahead, there’s even more to enjoy this October — workshops, classes, live music, trivia nights, and more fall adventures waiting to be explored. Whether you’re learning something new, diving into local history, or just soaking up the autumn spirit, there’s something for everyone this season!

Depot to Depot: Self Guided Fall Color Tour

🚂 Depot to Depot Fall Color Tour

Date: October 1-October 31
Location: Muskegon Union Depot (Muskegon) & White Lake Area Chamber & Visitors Bureau (Whitehall)

Event Description:
Experience the beauty of Michigan’s autumn foliage at your own pace with the Depot to Depot Self-Guided Fall Color Tour. This scenic route stretches from the Muskegon South Pierhead Light at Pere Marquette Beach to the White River Light Station on the White Lake Channel, connecting Muskegon and Whitehall, and into Montague, along the West Michigan Pike Byway.

Start your journey at one (or both!) of Muskegon County’s historic train depots:

  • Muskegon Union Depot Visitor Center (1895 Richardsonian Romanesque style, featuring historic memorabilia, public art, and a classic caboose).
  • White Lake Area Chamber & Visitors Bureau (home to the 90702 historic caboose, celebrating 100 years in 2024, with stunning views of White Lake).

Pick up your free Scenic Route Map, insider tips, and a special fall-themed postcard at either location to kick off your adventure. Visit both depots to collect the complete postcard series!

Along the way, enjoy:

Create four unique greeting cards by painting with alcohol ink. Learn how this medium responds with unusual characteristics compared to traditional paint mediums and have fun experimenting with your own color combinations!

About the Instructor:

Marie Essenberg has been a nature and wildlife artist for 50 years and nature is where her soul thrives and roots connect. She has used many mediums to create detailed artwork such as oil, watercolor, pastel, graphite, colored pencil, pen and ink, acrylic, and scratchboard. Over the years her work has been shown at many galleries and art shows in several states.

ACWL-Nuveen classes are supported by CatchMark Technologies, Michigan Arts & Culture Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nuveen Benevolent Trust.

Bird Marionette Puppet Building Workshop

(Register students 12 and up on their own, or students age 8 and up with an adult building partner. Also open to adults who wish to build their own marionette. Families welcome.) Instructor Joey Emory of the My Air Productions Puppet Barn offers a Puppetry Education weekend with The Playhouse at White Lake and their White Lake Youth Theatre program. IN THIS FUN FILLED WORKSHOP, students LEARN ABOUT marionette MOVEMENT, marionette CONSTRUCTION, HOW TO BUILD their OWN LITTLE SHOW AND most importantly, all students will learn how to make their very own MARIONETTE, who they will build at the workshop, and then bring home to bring to LIFE FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. THIS IS A TWO HOUR, hands-on WORKSHOP FOR ALL AGES (PARENTS encouraged TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FUN. AT THE END, WE’LL RECORD SHORT VIDEOS of each of our students with their marionette puppets as we all ENTER THE WORLD OF PERFORMING MARIONETTE ARTISTS. $25 pays for supplies, and spaces are limited. The next day, Saturday, October 18, come back to The Playhouse to see Instructor Joey Emory in his favorite role, as Master Puppeteer behind the 2 pm family- friendly puppet show, The Frog Prince.
