The White Lake Chamber Music Festival Announces a Stunning 10-year Anniversary Season!

From August 2 to 11, this year’s White Lake Chamber Music Festival will present exceptional performances and events held throughout the White Lake area of Montague and Whitehall.  The Festival will open with a spectacular brass concert featuring the Gaudete Brass Quintet. Special presentations will be made by local officials in honor of the White Lake Chamber Festival’s 10th anniversary. This event will be held at the 1st Congregational Church of Muskegon (1201 Jefferson St.). Gaudete (gow-day-tay) is a form of the Latin word for “Joy.”

The Chicago based, world-renowned Avalon String Quartet returns to the White Lake area for the 10th annual White Lake Chamber Music Festival. This quartet, described as “…deeply musical and sheerly gorgeous”, is the cornerstone of the Festival, presenting 3 concerts, open rehearsals, and community outreach. Having established itself as one of the country’s leading chamber music ensembles, The Avalon String Quartet continues astonishing audiences across the nation with their performances.

Joining Avalon on August 8 will be pianist Kuang-Hao Huang performing Dvorak’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A Major.

Local, national, and international performers will come together in the White Lake area during this 10-day festival. Virtuoso violinist James Buswell will be joined by touring and recording artist, cellist Carol Ou and New England Conservatory pianist Andrew Goodridge on August 3. They will perform Beethoven’s “Ghost” Piano Trio and Brahm’s Piano Trio in B major, Op.8.

Hear the Detroit Symphony Trio, featuring flutist Jeff Zook, violinist Sheryl Hwangbo, and cellist David Ledoux on Monday, August 5. They will perform music by Devienne, Piazolla, Edgar Girtan and others. This trio was formed in 2015 after the Detroit Symphony began its mission to bring symphonic and chamber music into the neighborhoods and communities surrounding Orchestra Hall and Detroit. Since then the Trio has enjoyed performing throughout Michigan bringing innovative and inspiring sounds to audiences of all ages.

Youth programming will be expanded this year to include more events:

  • The popular educational children’s concert at the White Lake Community Library featuring Val Letenyei, founder of MusicEveryday! in Spring Lake and licensed Kindermusik Educator and Elementary Pedagogy Specialist
  • An opportunity for young musicians to perform
  • A children’s concert at the Montague Public Library featuring educator and cellist Erin Wang
  • A performance by the winner of the Young Artists College Solo Competition – Gabrielle Karel (Hope College), piano – giving the community a glimpse into Michigan’s top talent from the state’s universities and colleges.

A Piano Sonata Recital on August 6 at 7:30 features Andrea Swan, Chicago’s own well-known chamber musician, collaborative pianist, orchestral keyboard player, soloist and teacher. She will perform works of Bach, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Franz, and Chopin. This concert will be held at St. James’ Lutheran Church in Montague.

The Festival Chamber Orchestra has become one of the festival’s audience favorites. On Friday, August 9, will be showcased in this program at the Montague United Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m. Featured soloists are Jeff Zook, flute; Marie Wang, violin; and famous harpsichordist David Schrader.

Free Salon Concerts are among the many highlights of the week. Talented musicians will be featured daily at 4:30 p.m. at the Book Nook and Java Shop. Guest artists include William Watson, tenor and Tracy Watson, soprano (Sat.) ; Cello duo – Michael Carrera and Pablo Mahave-Veglia (Mon.),  4 Hand Piano – Bryan Uecker and Steve Thielman joined by flutist Don Bailey and pianist Aldo DeVero (Tues.); Solo Competition winner Gabrielle Karel, piano (Wed.); Vireo Trio – violinist Michelle Valllier, cellist Erin Wang, and pianist Bryan Uecker (Thur.); Classical Guitar Duo – Brian Morris and  Jonathon Marshall (Fri.); the  Ma Non Troppo Woodwind Trio – clarinetists John Varineau and Sondra Cross, and bassoonist Genevieve Beaulieu (Sat.).

The Festival is truly a unique, collaborative, community event. Local churches and businesses continue to take part and graciously host performances. In only ten years, nearly 200 concerts, edifying lectures, recitals, master classes, youth concerts, the young artists’ competition and open rehearsals have been held. Audiences continue to grow and come from greater distances, helping to make the Festival and our area a vacation destination.
