Water Resources Commissioner
The Water Resources Commissioner administers the State Drain Code for Muskegon County. The Code calls for management and maintenance of existing and proposed drainage districts, construction and maintenance of drains, sewers, pumping equipment, bridges, culverts, fords, structures and mechanical devices to purify the flow of water through the system. The commissioner manages flood control and water systems throughout the county. (source: Drain Act of 1956)
The Commissioner is responsible for: assuring compliance with state environmental protection laws pertaining to water; administering the state Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Act, which provides for the control of soil erosion and protects adjacent properties and the waters of the state from sedimentation; monitoring water quality in county drains that discharge to waters of the state; managing financial assessments and engaging in enforcement activities with respect to encroachments on easements, illicit discharges in county drains, etc.
