1st Annual White Lake Paddle

The White Lake Environmental Council, in partnership with the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, is sponsoring the 1st Annual White Lake Paddle, on Sunday, August 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. The kayak/canoe tour will take approximately two hours, and begin at Maple Grove Park, 4655 Goodrich Street in Montague. Guides for the tour include local historian Roger Scharmer and Tanya Cabala, volunteer coordinator for the Environmental Council. Participants of the tour will learn about local history of the area, restoration of White Lake, and new projects aimed at maintaining the health of the lake. The tour is for adult kayakers or canoeists with basic paddling skills.

Participants should arrive prior to the tour start time to unload their kayaks or canoes and are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and bring water and snacks if needed. Other optional items include: sunscreen, bug spray, hat, and binoculars. Life jackets are required for all participants. There is no cost for the tour. If weather causes a cancellation of the tour, it will be rescheduled for August 13 (same time and location).

There will be a limited number of kayaks for rental at a discounted rate provided by WaterDog Outfitters  in Montague. People will need to reserve kayaks in advance and reference they are for the White Lake Paddle to receive the special rate. Attendees renting kayaks will need to launch from WaterDog Outfitters and meet up with the tour group at Maple Grove Park prior to the start of the paddle event.

The White Lake Environmental Council was founded in the spring of 2015, a reorganization of the White Lake Public Advisory Council, which worked from 1992 to 2014 to restore beneficial uses and delist White Lake as a Great Lakes Area of Concern. Its vision is that White Lake and its watershed is a sustainable ecosystem, protected and enjoyed by current and future generations. The group’s mission is to conserve, protect, and restore the White Lake ecosystem through education, coordination, and advocacy, and goals are to improve and maintain White Lake’s environmental quality, inspire citizen stewardship, and support sustainable economic prosperity.

The group’s current specific focus is on maintaining citizen oversight of the White Lake area’s contaminated sites, promoting green infrastructure and natural shorelines, encouraging proper septic system management on lakeshore and tributary lots, and maintaining citizen stewardship. To RSVP or for more information, call (231) 981-0016 or send an email to tcabala@charter.net.
