A community wide campaign, created by a large group of community members in conjunction with the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of Whitehall, and the City of Montague has been created to give the area a deeper sense of community pride and define what it means to live, work, and play in White Lake. Throughout the course of the campaign, they also hope to attract tourists to make both Montague and Whitehall more top-of-mind destinations.

The process of creating the campaign began with a team of approximately thirty core individuals who live, work, or own a business in the White Lake area meeting with a Muskegon-based creative marketing team, Revel. A focus group was conducted with the core team to get their thoughts, feelings, likes, dislikes, and perspectives on the future of both Whitehall and Montague.
Jen Hain, a White Lake native and owner of Fetch Brewing Co., was part of the process.
“It was great to collectively come together with different opinions and figure out how we can build a stronger community, both internally and externally,” said Hain.
After the focus group, a survey was sent out to the community to evaluate the ideas gathered from the discussions. In total, 576 individuals completed the survey, answering questions regarding their desired image for the community and feelings toward their hometown.
The results of this community research directly led to a new mission statement that defines White Lake’s beliefs and four unique campaign theme options for consideration. The core team then discussed and chose a final theme based on what best represents the area. Now, the campaign is in full swing for future advertising and communications.
Community engagement is the central goal of this effort. To increase awareness and involvement, a campaign website will allow community members to learn more about the campaign and freely download logos and other graphics to use at will. Businesses and individuals are encouraged to make banners, signs, flags, posters, and any other promotional material they would like.
Those involved are trying to create a distinct image for White Lake they are proud to share, while differentiating the area from other towns.
“The White Lake area is where I grew up, so it’s encouraging to see the progress,” said Hain. “I’m definitely a strong advocate of rallying around this campaign to show that White Lake is a place for everyone to enjoy.” The launch of the campaign took place on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 3:45 pm and was followed by a demonstration on how the campaign can be used.
